Cigar Review by Andrew Passantino: Drew Estate Liga Privada #9 x Undercrown

Hello this is Serious Bok & I have requested that the intricate & versatile cigar smoking micro brew sipping Andrew Passantino bless us with some cigar reviews from an authentic cigar smoker of the people for the people. (run on sentence is ok just this once). Here Mr. Passantino hit us with two reviews or two great cigars. Please welcome & follow him on twitter @TheSicilian33 LUXE.

The Drew Estate Liga Privada #9 is an interesting cigar and by far my favorite. It comes dark in appearance with a white label. The interesting thing about the cigar is the scent. It smells like the perfect cigar, and it is. I would call it more of a boutique cigar. I use a standard double blade cutter that you can get at your average shop. Light it and it has this strong sensation spicy type of taste.

It burns very evenly and doesn’t get too smokey like the Undercrown. It’s a good tasting cigar, but when you get to the middle, you are completely shocked. You have never tasted such a cigar in your life. It’s like your taste buds go on a wild roller coaster specifically Nitro. You think it’s going to be a heavy cigar, but it’s the smoothest smoke I ever had. I usually have about 3-5 of these a day, so I enjoy it alot. The ash is very white and burns perfectly. It’s very hard to get this cigar to finally burn out because it burns so well.

At the end, you know right away that this is your cigar, and you need another one. This would be a perfect cigar on the beach on some paradise island. At the end, it has some what of a nutty taste, but it’s not as heavy and you believe it to me. I’m 21 years old, and my taste buds are constantly changing, but this is by far my favorite cigar. When properly humidified it’s not to hard and crunchy but it’s not too soft either. This is a great cigar to go with beer, liquor, a game of poker, a football game, or basically for an every day smoke. If you haven’t tried this cigar, pick it up it’s a gem!! You’ll impress a few of your buddies also because it’s not exactly easy to find!! Imagine your favorite beer.. but in cigar form.

Here we have the Undercrown also made by Drew Estate. You’re a little curious because you may be wondering if it’s anything like the Liga Privada’s. It’s more of a cousin if anything. You have a lighter appearance than the Liga. It’s an easy cut. As you get ready to light it, you’re thinking how interesting this cigar is. Well, here you go, you’ve finally cut it. It sounds like a perfect cut that you have accomplished which you have.

You start smoking it at first with that heavy tobacco taste. You’re thinking hmm this is a little interesting it’s not like the Liga at all. Because it’s not. It doesn’t have the taste or the spice of the Liga, but it is VERY smokey. If you’re against the smokey part of a cigar, then you shouldn’t smoke this. By smoking this, it’s like you’re in a Godfather scene with the Godfather speaking to his soldiers with the smoke in the background. It doesn’t have the power of the Liga, but it is one heck of a smoke. It’s not as smooth as a T-52 but if you smoke Liga’s you’ll enjoy this cigar.

After a Tatuaje Fausto, I usually smoke an Undercrown because they go well together one after the other. You get a little sweetness, coffee, and nut taste, but this goes away as soon as you get to the middle. The ash is white in appearance and once again it burns perfectly. It’s another cigar that I smoke every day.

What a busy 2012 this has been so far. A few interviews, a couple photo shoots & a very special guest spot invite to a respectable radio morning show. New Jersey’s WRCC 107.7 fm The Bronc aka Team iLLz Medical Militia invited me out to their show to discuss the Single Malt & Cigars Luxe lifestyle. LUXE in the building and on the radio. Tune in to the Medical Militia radio show Sundays 9:30am- 10:30am on 107.7fm or stream online here >>> 1077thebronc.com

Christmas Gifts For Her

Christmas is in 7 days & most likely we have that major thing thing our loved ones want, but how about that little extra. That other unexpected thing that says,”I take the extra step.” Here are a few do-able item gift ideas for the ladies that go beyond the norm. Fellas listen if you want. Ladies drop hints and they will have to.

Bond #9 High Line is described as ,”The scent of wildflowers, green grasses & urban renewal.” Listen it smells fresh and no one will smell like her. She may be a Beyonce fan and I know its easy to go to CVS and get that Beyonce Heat… but don’t. Available at Saks Fifth Avenue stores. 100ml $220

Alexander McQueen Skull Scarf. Why because it’s tough and the skulls are mean, but she will smell all feminine and intimidate. Also at Saks or online $295

Balenciaga Shades. I like shades so if I’m fly she fly. These are popular not not common. Very fly. Find these at Solstice Sunglasses. $375

A camera upgrade is always nice. I know most phones especially iphones have great cameras. Nothing better than an official camera during vacation time or especially at concerts. Disposable cameras are useless at concerts.

Neiman Marcus Jewelry Box. Her jewelry box should be just as Luxe as your humidor. If your cigars are in imported Spanish cedar with golden handles her diamonds and baubles should be just as comfortable. $285

Speaking of cigars get her some. If your lucky and she smokes cigars hit up your local Cigar Shop like Barrister Cigars for some Drew Estate Acid Blondies or whatever she likes.

The only thing better than happy hour prices is a free happy hour. Throw some gift cards to her & her girls friends favorite watering hole in a stocking. Fridays, Cheesecake Factory, Legal Seafood , Nobu..etc,.The place she likes not you! Remember it’s the thought not how much the gift cost..usually. Merry Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa all that from Serious Bok!

Mr. Beaton Cigar Review x Jaime Garcia Reserva Especial L.E.

Size: 6.5 x 52 (Toro)
Wrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf
Binder: Nicaraguan Pelo de Oro
Filler: 2 types of Cuban Seed Nicaraguan
Strength: Full

The Jaime Garcia Reserva Especial Limited Edition starts off with a beautiful
Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper. Same as the core Reserva Especial, only with more
shine. The wrapper of this Limited Edition is firm, but has soft spot or two. While
the wrapper of the cigar gives off hints of cedar and spice aroma the foot has very
strong oaky, and earthy aroma.

The pre-light draw on the Limited Edition starts off
with a bitter dark chocolate taste before moving towards a cedar flavor. Upon first
draw after lighting you immediately get hit with strong peppery flavor, you then get
notes of cinnamon and coffee upon second and third draws. The Limited Edition has a
nice burn to it, not a lot of smoke coming off the foot while holding which is a
plus in my book. Ash on the Limited Edition holds for about an 1″ to 1.5″. The
strength of the Limited Edition eases up a little towards the middle of the cigar
smoothing out the smoke. You still get all the flavors from first lite but just not
as strong.

The end Limited Edition is where the strength of the cigar starts to pick
back up again, with every draw you get all the spices noted at the start only with
more heat behind them. I nubbed down the Limited Edition because that’s what I tend
to do with all cigars that I smoke as to ensure that I’m getting my monies worth and
also its full flavor profile. Overall the Jaime Garcia Reserva Especial Limited
Edition was a good and not great smoke to me. It didn’t seem to have the full body
flavor that it claims to be for my taste, maybe that will be different for another
palette.

Montecristo Cigars on 5th Ave, NYC

Recently on a excursion through NYC I was a little tired from walking and throwing it in the bag. It was hot outside and I was cigar-less. Then I look up and see the Montecristo Cigars establishment on 5th Ave. They have cigars & ac to save me.

I walk inside and there are plenty of cigars, but the air conditioner wasn’t the only thing cold. The looks I received were colder. Not one hello, may I help you or what do you usually smoke? If you don’t wish to assist me smile and walk away. Don’t look at me like, wtf are you doing here?

I know I know we go into cigar lounges for cigars not to be smacked on the butt & high fived. I am aware that this is a major tourist area and large places like this usually lack personality. That’s no excuse. Holt’s treated me great. Even J&R did when I used to go. There was one young man with twists in his hair who seemed to be lively and energetic about his role in the cigar industry. He was happily assisting another customer with a lighter. The rest of the staff appeared to be sizing me up for my burial suit. Not Luxe…

I took my money elsewhere. Instead I spent my almost $100 on pastries at Dean & Deluca for the women I love & got my cigars when I got back to Jersey. LUXE!
